Oakfield Clinical Director John Ambler retires after 42 happy years

Farewell to a fantastic team

Having worked at Oakfield for the last 42 years, I have decided to retire in order to spend more time with my family. I joined this practice when it was known as J.Donald and Partners and had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy Donald several times before he sadly passed away.

After two years, I purchased a partnership with Wynn Jones, Norman Spence and Roger Coley, and we changed the practice name to Oakfield. At that time we were a very mixed practice with over half our work being with farm animals. Calvings in the middle of the night followed with an occasional tot of brandy from a grateful farmer; cows needing calcium injections at dawn; driving over the fields in the farmers Land Rover with my children riding in the back enjoying the bumpy ride. Having spent my first two years in a rural practice in Yorkshire this was normal veterinary life straight out of the James Herriot books.

Over the following years there was a slow but inexorable transition to ‘small animals’ (dogs, cats, anything that did not live in a field!) until we had to make the decision to abandon our ‘large animal’ farm work in order to be able to do our small animal work properly, as the two did not sit comfortably together. This decision enabled us to perform much better as a first opinion practice and develop our own specialities within that structure.

Within the last 12 years we had the opportunity to open a surgery in Tamworth which has proved to be a successful addition to the Oakfield group. Throughout this period of constant change we have concentrated on being happy. Happy to come to work, happy to chat with our colleagues, happy to serve our patients and clients, as without that underlying feeling one cannot perform to one’s best – this being our overriding aim.

Customers thanked for their support and loyalty

I am blessed with having worked with a team of fantastic individuals, all of whom have the care and respect of animals and their owners in their hearts and minds. I am confident that my fellow Clinical Director, Emma Chetwynd, will continue to lead Oakfield in this vein throughout the coming years and thereby guarantee its continued success. A Veterinary Surgery is a team. It may be made up of individuals but it can only function properly as a team. The team I am leaving is second to none; we laugh together, we are upset together. As an owner you can rest assured that Team Oakfield will continue to look after your lovely charges with the same care and respect you have enjoyed to date.

To all my friends, clients and colleagues – thank you so much for your support and loyalty over the years. Stay safe, keep well and above all in these trying times keep smiling!!
